I don’t get the problem if it is a drill press, unless there is slop in the chuck or the bit is bent. Clamping the piece down to the table is all you need. You could go the extra step of two metal glide rods with something like pillow bearings if the drill press chuck assembly was sloppy, Hand drilling I could see the work case, but a hole in a plank that you can clamp on a could of sides is simpler. Creative though 😁
should of drilled the hole for your pegs on opposite sides . That way you could rotate the knobs in the same direction (either clockwise or counter clockwise) and maintained the same level on your bolts .
