DIY!!

How to Make Anyone Can Thread Without Tapping Bits

This video is a new way to make a thread using a glue gun and oil without a tapping bit.

The advantage is that you can create threads of any size and shape of the bolt and on a variety of materials (wood, plastic, gypsum board, metal, etc.).

The disadvantage is that the glue gun is weak against heat, so you need to be careful about frictional heat when tightening bolts.

thank you.

I liked it! I’ve done similar things. I love hot glue. It’s very versatile when making prototypes. And it also comes in handy for problem-solving. This video could use a part 2 showing strength testing.

It might hold a picture on the wall but theirs no clamping force the glue would strip threads out.

I wonder if you could do the same thing with a stronger glue. Maybe mixed epoxy or JB weld would be stronger. Would be interesting to test how much force it takes to rip out with the threads in the wood vs hot glue vs other things. Possibly some wood glues, superglue etc.

This is a pretty good idea, you can buy resin to put into concrete so I’d imagine you could use some wood glue with this or stronger glue

Naturally, It is useful for light items such as clothes hangers and toilet paper hangers because its strength is weak compared to anchor nuts.
Thank you 😄

Good post.

I do much the same with epoxy resin. Heat a bolt and coat it with wax. Fill a hole with epoxy resin. Press in the (waxy) bolt. Back the bolt out a few hours later when the epoxy is cured. You can always heat the bolt slightly, if needed, with a soldering iron. Now you have super good threads that can be remolded if they accidentally get cross threaded. Mine is a boat builder’s technique.

It’s a decent idea for light duty but in reality you can thread into wood without glue or anything just think drywall is hung with screws lol now in light work on other materials it’s not a bad idea

Interesting bit of ingenuity there. I’m curious on how well flex seal may do for more weighted objects now.

It would also increase strength if when you initially dig the drill holes, you could remove more wood from the deepest part of the hole so that the thread mold essentially creates “grooves” that is deeply embedded in the wood once the glue is dry.

This is a great experiment. Can be utilized for existing holes in anything, or in fragile material. Awesome

I work in quality engineering. I will replicate this experiment and do some durability testing using this on different materials like wood, steel, aluminum etc. Then after I have the results I will repost in this comment thread the results from the data for metrics like:
Torque and Angle limits
Breakaway Torque
Thread clamping /Yield strength
Durability @ different temperatures etc.
This should be interesting……..
